Season finale

Aspen Times writer

The 26th anniversary season of the Aspen Times Town Race Series – the longest-running town ski racing series in the country – comes to a close this weekend at Highlands. On Saturday the advanced division will compete in the slalom finale on Thunderbowl. Because of last week’s snow cancellation of the recreation division’s giant slalom, there will be a make-up race Sunday, but with a twist: Competitors will take part in a one-run giant slalom race, then a run on a slalom course.Anyone is welcome to participate in this weekend’s events. Race-day sign-up takes place from 8:30-10 a.m. at the Endeavor Cafe on the Highlands mall. In order to take advantage of the hard morning snow, race times have been adjusted; Saturday’s race starts at 10:30 a.m., and Sunday’s kicks off at 11 a.m.A traditional season-ending barbecue will follow each day of racing, with season awards, raffles for ski equipment and money, not to mention free burgers, brats and beer. Racers and nonracers are invited to participate.”Participation in this league has been outstanding this season,” Aspen Skiing Co. race director Scott Nichols said in a news release. “Our numbers have more than doubled in the last three years, and it is great fun to have all that new energy in the league.”For more information, contact the race department at 544-3005, or visit http://www.aspensnowmass.com/racing.
