Incumbent Republican Scott Tipton defeated Democratic challenger Gail Schwartz to reclaim his seat in Colorado’s sprawling 3rd Congressional District.

With 93 percent of the projected vote counted, Tipton won with 185,238 votes, or 55 percent, to Schwartz’ 137,600 votes, or 41 percent, as of 7 a.m. Wednesday. The Associated Press called the race for Tipton at 11:33 p.m. Tuesday.

Results had been slowed by problems in Pueblo County, where a new voting system designed to help election results move quicker was overwhelmed Tuesday night.

Tipton took office in 2010 and won praise for his work for local farmers and ranchers and the oil and gas industry.
