Schwartz saved lives

Dear Editor:

I am writing in support of the re-election of state Sen. Gail Schwartz. I had the wonderful opportunity of working with Sen. Schwartz last legislative session on the Wildlife Crossings Bill (HB1238). This bill allows the Colorado Department of Transportation, Division of Wildlife and Colorado State Patrol to identify 100 miles of the most dangerous sections of highway in Colorado for animal crossings and lower the nighttime speeds in those areas.

A preliminary study by CDOT had showed up to a 50 percent reduction in collisions in a test study with lowered nighttime speeds. In our CDOT Region 3, collisions with wildlife had gone up 35 percent from 1,289 to 1,745 in 2008-09! Sen. Schwartz recognized this danger to the public safety of all Coloradans and especially to those in her district. She put her heart and soul into doing something about the problem. For that we should all be thankful. She has helped save people and animal lives.

I witnessed her in action at the Senate Transportation Committee meeting and again on the Senate floor. We just could not be represented by anyone more qualified and dedicated to this job than Sen. Schwartz. Please vote to re-elect Colorado State Sen. Gail Schwartz.
