School board ready to sign up superintendent

The Aspen School Board expects to sign a contract with its choice for district superintendent on Thursday, members say, but the group still wants public comment on the matter.

Though the board named Dr. Diana Sirko of Colorado Springs as its top candidate for superintendent on July 24, state law requires a 14-day waiting period before a contract can be signed. The two-week lull is meant to encourage community opinion and also allows for extensive contract negotiations, board members say.

The school board’s waiting period ends at 5 p.m. Thursday, when members will meet with Sirko and make things official. However, the general public still has three days to make themselves heard, notes board president Augie Reno.

Questions and comments may be directed to any of the board’s five members, as well as Assistant Superintendent Joanne Ihrig, Reno said.

Some questions cannot be answered until Sirko is officially hired. Board member Jon Seigle reported that he has fielded several calls concerning the specifics of the superintendent’s proposed contract, including the offered salary. As the contract has not been finalized, its conditions are not yet open to the public, Seigle said.

“But we want to assure everybody that the contract is totally consistent with the market for this position and the needs of this district,” he said.
