Scholarship thanks

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:

As Aspen High School students attend the first organizational meetings for the fall 2004 Experiential Education trips, the scholarship committee would like to thank the many members of the community who have generously provided scholarships for students to participate in the program.

Barbara Wickes and the Aspen Booster Club combined their efforts to raise more than $12,000 from our community. Twenty-six students have applied for and will receive scholarships to take part in one of the hallmark programs at the high school.

The trips provide a meaningful experience for students outside of the classroom structure. Students are offered a range of opportunities in wilderness exploration, urban experiences, and at-home immersion programs. In the words of a student who received a financial need scholarship last year: “I learned how to ride horses and I have that skill now. I learned about the people on my trip and some of them have become my good friends.”

We would like to recognize the support of the following individuals for contributing to the fund: the Aspen Rotary Club, Richard Butera, Alpine Bank, S. Marcus Finkle, Geraldine Whitman, Jon Seigle, and Barbara and Steve Wickes.

The scholarship fund welcomes any additional contributions to assist students in future years. With the generosity of this year, we have funding to continue the program into the future. If you are interested in supporting the program, please contact either Caroline Hanson or Linda Lafferty at Aspen High School.
