Saving the world, one sip at a time in Basalt
BASALT – Who says environmentalists take life too seriously?
A new chapter of an international club called Green Drinks will launch in Basalt Tuesday eveningl Interested people are urged to get together from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cuvee bar and restaurant for drinks and appetizers, and to share thoughts on top environmental issues.
“Save the world – one sip at a time,” says a flier for the inaugural event.
Mary Kenyon, a public relations and marketing expert who does a lot of work in Basalt, is helping organize the event. There is a chapter in Carbondale that’s been successful, Kenyon said, so she thought the concept would go over well in Basalt, too.
Kenyon said the initial meetings will probably focus on energy efficiency since there are so many initiatives on that front under way right now. Pitkin and Eagle county voters in November approved bond issuances which will create a pool of money for low-interest loans used for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
“For the next two or three years, I expect it to be really robust,” Kenyon said of energy efficiency discussions at the Green Drinks club meetings. Energy efficiency experts from the Community Office for Resource Efficiency and probably some local contractors will be at the first meeting. Homeowners will be invited to attend and learn about more steps they can take.
Kenyon said participants will be able to discuss whatever topics they choose, beyond efficiency. The success of the group will depend on the degree to which people are willing to mingle in the informal setting.
“It’s networking about environmentally friendly things,” Kenyon said.
The appetizers and drinks will be complimentary while they last. Kenyon said Green Drinks Basalt will meet at varying watering holes on the first Tuesday evening monthly.
