Sarah Girgis, arts and entertainment editor for The Aspen Times, has been named the newspaper’s interim publisher. A national search for a new publisher is planned.

Girgis replaces Allison Pattillo, who had served as publisher since January 2022. Pattillo’s last day with the newspaper was Tuesday.

Girgis began her tenure with The Aspen Times in October 2022. Prior to relocating to Aspen, she spent more than 20 years working in the television industry in Los Angeles as an executive producer, producer, and director. She and her husband now live in Old Snowmass.

“I am deeply honored to take the helm of a newspaper whose legacy stretches back to 1881, a publication that has long served as a cornerstone of this community,” she said. “The Aspen Times has played an integral role in shaping the conversation and connecting people for generations, and I am excited to help guide it into the future, continuing its tradition of excellence and commitment to the community.”

Pattillo said on Wednesday that she left due to differences over the future direction of the newspaper and declined further comment. Swift Communications, which owns The Aspen Times as well as eight other newspapers on Colorado’s Western Slope, does not comment on personnel matters.

Swift is a subsidiary of West Virginia-based Ogden Newspapers. Ogden operates more than 50 community newspapers in markets from New York to Hawaii.
