Santa Fe team fells Boogie’s

Aspen Times Staff Report

In the final game of the United Soccer Club of Aspen’s 28th Annual Coed Invitational Tournament Sunday, the local Boogie’s Diner team fell to perennial powerhouse Diablo, from Santa Fe, 3-1.

Diablo, a mixed team from New Mexico, won last year’s tournament and narrowly lost in the 1998 finals.

“They’re very competitive,” said tournament coordinator Marcia Sax. “They always have a strong team.

The Boogie’s Diner team was undefeated through Saturday, with wins over team No Problem of Denver, 3-1, the Butte Kickers of Crested Butte, 3-1, the Free Radicals of Boulder, 1-0, and Campus of Denver.

The Santa Fe Diablo team was also perfect through Saturday, with victories over the Pub Sharks of Denver, 3-1, Disaster of Denver 3-0, and Columbia of Denver, 1-0.

A total of 20 teams from throughout the near West competed in the tournament.

“It was a great tournament,” Sax said. “We had a rain delay Saturday, which messed things up a bit, but it was good overall. Great fun.”
