Saluting our firefighters
I am writing say thank you to the Basalt fire and police department, as well as those from Snowmass, Carbondale and Aspen for the amazing care and diligence they gave to the recent house fire at 510 Lake Court in Basalt.
My family and I live at 505 Lake Court, and by the time we realized the house across the street was on fire, the trucks and teams were already on the scene. My husband and I were putting our kids to bed and had no idea what was going on until we heard the sirens. The firefighters saved the two houses next door and prevented the fire from spreading throughout the neighborhood. Someone from the department was on site through the entire night and for the next 48 hours. They kept a watchful eye on all the embers flying around to make sure the rest of us were safe.
As someone who at age 21⁄2 experienced the trauma of losing my baby brother and our family home to fire, I was reminded of all that can go wrong in a situation like this. It was a peaceful sound hearing the fire trucks running all night outside our house two weeks ago.
The dedication of these men and women who put their lives on the line everyday for the Roaring Fork Valley is extraordinary, especially given that it is a volunteer department. They all have jobs, families and other commitments in their lives, yet take the time to complete the training and develop the expertise that is required to be on the team.
I have witnessed the commitment and care of our volunteer fire department for over 40 years and I am so incredibly grateful!
