Safire’s bait fishy

Dear Editor:Something smells fishy about William Safire trying to bait Jewish voters into the Bush column at the polls. Safire describes himself as “one who has all his life been a political minority within an ethnic minority.” As a liberal Catholic, I know exactly what that feels like. But, for all their differences, Mr. Safire and our archconservative Catholic bishops share something in common. By prophesying doom for those who cast their vote for Kerry – heat on Israel for Jews and hell in the afterlife for Catholics – both are trying to shift the focus of the debate from where it truly belongs: on their own candidate’s proven track record of mass destruction.
