S.C. man killed in Highway 82 crash
ASPEN – A South Carolina man was killed late Saturday in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 82 outside of Aspen, according to the Colorado State Patrol.William C. Loflin, 31, of Rock Hill, S.C., was traveling west on the highway when the Jeep Wranger he was driving went into the median as it rounded a curve. The vehicle began to overturn as it returned to the highway lanes, ejecting Loflin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the patrol.The vehicle came to rest blocking the right lane of the highway after rolling several times. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said.The accident occurred at about 11:52 p.m., closing the westbound lanes of the highway. Traffic was rerouted onto Smith Hill Road, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Department. More than an hour later, one westbound lane of the highway was reopened. Both lanes were open by 3:36 a.m. Sunday, according to an e-mail alert.Alcohol and excessive speed are under investigation as factors in the accident, according to the patrol.Along with the state patrol and the sheriff’s office, the Colorado Department of Transportation, Aspen Volunteer Fire Department and D&D Towing responded to the scene.
