Routt County mulls layoffs to balance budget

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. ” Layoffs appear likely as Routt County struggles to make up a projected $4.9 million budget shortfall.

The county commissioners say managers will have a set of criteria by May 15 to decide which positions to eliminate. They don’t expect any layoffs before June 30.

Commissioner Diane Mitsch Bush says she wants to exhaust other options before considering layoffs. The county is considering possible furloughs and County Manager Tom Sullivan is reviewing department budgets to look for more places to cut.

The county has the equivalent of about 285 full-time positions. According to previous estimates, eliminating 19 positions would reduce county personnel expenses by a minimum of $695,400.
