Ron ‘Ronnie’ Weissman
Ron “Ronnie” Weissman a longtime Aspen resident, passed away at his home in Reno, Nev., on Sunday, July 11, 2010. He was 70.
Many remember Ron for his warm smile, his elegant old-school style of skiing, and his love of fishing despite his earnest, but fruitless, bounty. What he lacked as a fisherman, he made up for as a friend, father and grandfather. A generous and playful man, we will never forget his jokes and are each left with innumerable stories of his extraordinary presence in our lives.
Ron and Peggy moved with their three children, Michelle, Brett and Jennifer, from St. Louis to Aspen in the summer of 1975. Ron and Peggy made friends quickly with many locals from across the counter at Poppycock’s, at Red Mountain dinner parties and bota-bag tailgate picnics at Snowmass.
Fishing, skiing and camping were among Ron’s greatest passions. He loved Aspen in every season. For a city boy who grew up in St. Louis, he acclimated swiftly to become the “Jewish cowboy” with a knack for making bonfires and telling campfire tales.
He was the father who was the favorite parent leading school camping trips, who taught us to ski and rock hop across Hunter Creek, and who gave us all a deep appreciation for Oreo centers, root beer floats and steak tartare. He then became a beloved grandfather and was extraordinarily close to his four granddaughters who, with his encouragement, were starting to like camping.
If asked to describe Ron, many would note his good heart. And it was ultimately his dear heart that gave way and much too soon. Ron is survived by his son, Brett; daughters Michelle and Jennifer; sister SuEllen and brother Gary. He will also be terribly missed by his granddaughters, Devon, Morgan, Alexandra and Kate.
While his travels brought him to Missouri, Texas and Nevada these last few years, Colorado was always his home.
We will therefore bring him back to celebrate his life in the place he loved the most.
The memorial service will be held at Prince of Peace Chapel in Aspen on Sunday, July 18 at 5:30 p.m.
If you have photographs you’d like to share of Ron, please email them to Jennifer.firstname.lastname@example.org.
In lieu of flowers, we believe Ron would prefer contributions to “Make A Wish Colorado” foundation: http://www.wishcolorado.org/giving/ways.html.
