Roger, round one

Dear Editor:Okay, Pete Luhn. Here’s my position on illegal immigration in 200 words (I tried to write it slowly since I know you don’t think too quickly): First, we need to recognize that fact that undocumented foreigners working here are contributing positively to our economy. Most estimates are that these people cost the federal government around $10 billion dollars more than they pay in taxes. But, what is rarely mentioned is that they save the U.S. consumer upwards of $70 billion dollars per year due to lower costs of goods they help produce.Second, these workers are human beings. They deserve to be treated with dignity. I believe we have a moral obligation to help those less fortunate. They are only doing what most of us would do if our circumstances were reversed. Third, if you want to make the argument that this is about national security, you better be a proponent for battalions of troops, razor wire fences, and brick walls being installed along the Canadian border as well as the Mexican border. While fewer illegal immigrants come from the north, terrorists are just as likely to come from there.Fourth, it is fruitless to attack the effect of disparate bordering economies. To resolve this problem, we need to focus on the cause. If Mexico had a prosperous, modern economy there would not be a problem. Your turn – go for it.Roger MaroltSnowmass Village
