DENVER ” The second phase of a pipeline that will deliver natural gas from the Rockies to the Midwest is in operation.

The Rockies Express pipeline is carrying about 1.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day from Weld County, Colo., to Brown County, Kan. The first segment runs from Rio Blanco County, Colo., to Sweetwater County, Wyo., and then to Weld County.

A third section extending the pipeline to Audrain County, Mo., is expected to be in service by early February.

Kinder Morgan Partners LP, Sempra Energy and ConocoPhillips are in a joint venture to construct the nearly 1,700-mile pipeline. It will have a capacity of approximately 1.8 billion cubic feet a day when completed.

Full operation is expected to begin in June 2009 pending regulatory approval.
