Roadless areas deserve support

Dear Editor:

First of all, I am thankful and count myself lucky to live in an area still surrounded by vast forests and spectacular mountains!

Having said that, I am outraged by the current charade of reopening public comments on roadless conservation. Please note that roadless conservation has been the law of the land since Jan. 12, 2001, when it was published in the Federal Register.

After countless public meetings during 2000 and input by 1.6 million Americans throughout the country and especially in the White River National Forest region, and with 95 percent of the comments taken strongly in favor of roadless conservation, the issue became law of the land.

Although we live in a country that prides itself in being governed by the “rule of law,” the current occupant of the White House and his administration have worked cynically to subvert the expressed will of the American people by trying to eviscerate the roadless rule through legal smoke and mirrors, ever since they bullied their way into the White House on Jan. 20, 2001.

So, at this point, the roadless rule has been “devolved” to the decision of individual governors, many of whom are fellow travelers of the current manipulation team in Washington. To stop this travesty of the law, I urge all who respect the rule of law and support roadless conservation to be present and speak out at the public meeting at the Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs on June 21 to demand that the roadless rule as published in the Federal Register be honored.
