RMI helps with Empire State Building project

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

OLD SNOWMASS ” Rocky Mountain Institute of Snowmass was part of a team that helped design an energy-efficiency retrofit for the Empire State Building.

RMI and its partners used new and existing modeling, measurement and projection tools to determine a full understanding of the building’s energy use, its carbon output, and its functional efficiencies and deficiencies.

Using that template, the team identified eight economically viable projects. The landmark New York City building will undergo a $13.2 million project to reduce its energy consumption by 35 to 40 percent while saving $4.4 million annually in energy costs, according to a statement posted on RMI’s website.

The Institute was a design partner and peer reviewer for the project. It also created a website, esbsustainability.com, to showcase the tools and processes that resulted from the project.

“In order to make cities cleaner and more energy efficient, there is a real need for a replicable model for retrofitting existing buildings. This global template will help to significantly reduce carbon emissions and conserve energy in buildings all over the world,” RMI chairman and chief scientist Amory Lovins said in a statement.
