Rita Spira, of Snowmass Village, Colo. and Houston, Texas passed away peacefully early Jan. 7, 2013 at Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale, Colo.

She was born and raised in Augusta, Ga. and graduated from the University of Georgia. Shortly afterward, she married Dr. Melvin Spira, of Chicago, Ill. and provided him with loving support as he completed his plastic surgery residency in Houston. There, they raised three children while his career flourished and she devoted herself to her children’s activities and gained a broad circle of lifelong friends.

After attending a medical conference in Snowmass, she discovered a passion for skiing and a love of the mountains. Upon retirement, she and Melvin became permanent residents of Snowmass Village, where she not only enjoyed her skiing but also golf, hiking and a devoted network of friends.

She is survived by her loving husband Melvin and daughters Mary Ann Rose and Pamela Fishman and their spouses Richard Rose and Michael Fishman. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Alexandra, Brandon and Evan Rose, and Joshua and Anna Fishman. She was preceded in death by her son, Joel Spira. Burial is private and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486.
