Rising from the ashes
Dear Editor:On July 5, a fire destroyed our home on Frying Pan Road. As tragic as this has been for us, the response from the community has been overwhelming. We would like to thank all of you, old friends and new, for the love and caring you have shown us in the last three weeks. Thanks to Jerry Peetz and the Basalt Fire Department for calling in the right people and keeping the fire on our property. Thanks to Robert for saving my truck and looking for possible victims. To the Basalt and Thomasville Methodist Churches who were there for us immediately. Vince and Joy Higgins for starting the fund at Alpine Bank. To the other local businesses who provided the goods and services to us, thanks. Aspen Valley Hospital, bless you. To our talented friends who are planning our new home, thanks. To all of you who have stopped by the Basalt Post Office to wish me well, thanks. To those who have provided old photos, thank you.To all of you who prayed for us, it’s working.Jeffrey “JJ” Jacobsen, Julia, Maria and DaltonBasalt

Current Basalt officials say the town government has violated the Colorado Taxpayers’ Bill of Right by increasing the property tax mill levy over the prior years 10 times since the mid-2000s. Two former mayors contend the mill levy could be adjusted in any given year as long as it didn’t exceed the mill levy in 1994. It’s a $2 million question.
