Rink should go down, not up

Dear Editor:

Just a quick reminder for Torre that the Hyatt Grand Aspen ice rink is, in fact, owned by the Hyatt Grand Aspen (which is itself “owned” by a homeowners association).

While increasing its use and desirability as a public amenity is in everyone’s best interest, I don’t think it is a reasonable idea to ask a small collection of private individuals, who already generously fund its operating costs, to make the rink higher to afford a better view. If anything it should be lowered to accommodate some sort of shade structure so it can remain open later in the season (it is now closed for the season as it is too warm to keep the ice in the sun).

I do, however, strongly encourage Torre to ask the council for a small stipend so we can paint a curling sheet into the ice next year! I assure you that would increase the vitality of the ice rink and its value as an amenity to the Aspen community.
