Rifle man held on $1 million bond in fatal beating

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A judge has set bond at $1 million for a man suspected of fatally beating another man with a sledgehammer handle.

Forty-three-year-old Kenneth Earl Wright of Rifle appeared in Mesa County Court Tuesday. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of 52-year-old Steven Burdick.

Sheriff’s deputies say they found Burdick dead, face down on the floor Monday at his ranch in DeBeque in western Colorado. They say they went to the ranch after a call from Wright.

Investigators say Wright told them that he struck Burdick after an argument.

Wright is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 11, when prosecutors are expected to formally file charges.
