Revamped Aspen Club will offer unique experience

Dear Editor:

This is my first letter to the editor after leaving my post as the publisher of the Aspen Daily News. I’m writing in support of the Aspen Club and Spa redevelopment. I’m far from pro development and cringe at the thought of Aspen becoming Disneyland, err … Vail. But this project seems to fill a niche and offer something to the town that we currently don’t possess: a genuine wellness facility.

While we have many opportunities for holistic well-being and physical health, having a complex that could offer the complete experience could lead to us attracting some very interesting groups that, in my mind, are the type of people that make a town like Aspen flourish. Between the sports medicine, high-altitude endurance training, injury rehabilitation, strength training, a complex class schedule, and a place to stay on “campus,” we will be able to offer an experience unlike any currently in Aspen.

As it relates to the issue of land use, if I’m not mistaken both the Aspen Institute and the Benedict Building used the SPA process to accommodate linear zoning categories that didn’t quite fit. So as far as I can see if the project is a good fit for Aspen, which I believe it is, that’s exactly why the SPA process was created and has been used for other projects deemed good for this town.
