Results: Sutro wins Owl Creek Chase race as part of Ute Cup Nordic Series

The popular Owl Creek Chase cross-country ski race returned to Aspen on Sunday, the fifth of seven scheduled races in the Ute Cup Nordic Series this winter.
The main 30-kilometer freestyle course began at Snowmass Golf Club and took skiers to Buttermilk via the Owl Creek Trail and finally to the finish near Aspen High School.
Winning Sunday’s race was Carbondale’s Lina Sutro in 1 hour, 24 minutes, 29.4 seconds. She skied for the University of Vermont and then professionally through the SMS T2 team at Stratton Mountain before recently retiring and joining the staff of the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club.
In second on Sunday was Carbondale teen Kian Sullivan, who was also the top male finisher in 1:24:42.6. Egor Gavrilov, a former Owl Creek Chase champion, was third in 1:24:54.6.
There was also a shorter 15k freestyle option, won by Snowmass Village’s Nathan Waldron in 56:05.1, followed in second by Basalt teen Jack Kravitz in 1:01:35.6. The top woman was Snowmass Village’s Lauren Waldron, who was seventh overall in 1:07:01.8.
Snowmass 14-year-old Coral Tullar won the Owlet 5k freestyle in 22:31; Aspen 11-year-old Henry Shea won the Owlet 3k freestyle in 13:19.8; and Aspen 9-year-old Anderson Koster won the Owlet 1k freestyle in 6:25.7.
The next race is the annual Ski for the Pass, a 7k classic on Feb. 16 that supports the Independence Pass Foundation. The March 10 Silverboom, a 10k freestyle, will close out the season.
