Aspen’s Alex Ferreira had no issues making finals on Friday during the men’s halfpipe skiing qualifier at the 2025 world championships, hosted by St. Moritz and Engadin, Switzerland.

The 30-year-old scored a casual 88 on his first of two qualifying runs to finish third overall. New Zealanders took the top two spots, with Finley Melville-Ives recording scores of 94.75 and 97 to qualify first, while Luke Harrold was second with 90.

All told, the top 16 advanced to Sunday’s final. All four Americans finished in the top seven of qualifying. This includes Nevada’s David Wise (fourth, 85), Indiana’s Nick Goepper (sixth, 82.50), and Oregon’s Hunter Hess (seventh, 81.75).

The reigning world champ is Canada’s Brendan Mackay, who qualified eighth with 79.75.

Ferreira is a two-time Olympic medalist (bronze and silver) and a three-time X Games champion. A gold at worlds would give him one of the few remaining pieces of hardware he is missing from his resume. In his three prior times competing at worlds, he finished eighth, fourth, and third — the latter coming at the 2023 contest in Bakuriani, Georgia.

He’ll chase after the elusive Olympic gold a year from now at the 2026 Games in Italy.

In the women’s halfpipe skiing qualifier on Friday, Aspen’s Hanna Lamm came up just short of making finals in her world championship debut. The 19-year-old was 15th, with scores of 50.50 and 58.75, while only 12 made finals.

China’s Fanghui Li was the top qualifier with 95, followed in second by Great Britain’s Zoe Atkin (93.75). Two Americans made finals in Winter Park’s Svea Irving (eighth, 79.50) and California’s Kate Gray (10th, 78.25).

The reigning women’s world champ in halfpipe skiing is Basalt’s Hanna Faulhaber, who won the 2023 contest in Georgia. She is not competing as she recovers from injury.

The men’s and women’s snowboard halfpipe finals are Saturday in Switzerland. The skiers will drop in on Sunday in what is the final major contest of the season.
