Responsible exploration

Dear Editor:

As an employee of the Aspen Skiing Co., and a board member of the Environment Foundation, I feel I must respond to Mr. Marolt’s letter of Jan. 19.

The EF operates independently of the ASC and is not opposed to the efforts to explore for natural gas. We support the responsible use of and exploration for this clean energy source. We oppose and challenge the thinking that we must drill every square inch in western Colorado with total disregard for such very special places as the Roan Plateau. Taking the long-term view, gas and oil development have a history of boom and bust, and without proper oversight, leaves a forever scared landscape, while uses such as camping, hiking, fishing and hunting can go on indefinitely and provide enjoyment and revenues for generations to come.
