Rescuers hope funds mount up

Aspen Times Staff Report

Mountain Rescue Aspen is asking the Roaring Fork Valley community for financial support this month during its annual fund-raising drive.

Established in 1965, the nonprofit Mountain Rescue Aspen operates entirely on volunteer man and woman power – people dedicated to saving lives through backcountry rescues and mountain safety education – and is supported solely by donations, and grants received from local and state agencies.

Donations will be used to provide MRA rescuers with continued individual training, as well as to fund mountain safety courses for children and adults in the community. In addition, donations will be used to purchase and maintain rescue vehicles and other equipment, such as radios, avalanche rescue gear, medical supplies, ropes and miscellaneous technical equipment.

MRA will track donations on a sign depicting the Maroon Bells, to be displayed in front of the rescue cabin at 630 W. Main St. As donations are tallied, every $100 will advance lit-up climbers 100 feet up the 14,156-foot mountain.

Donations of any amount will be accepted, and patrons’ names will be entered into a donation book next to the climbing board.

All checks should be made out to Mountain Rescue Aspen and sent to: 630 W. Main St., Aspen, CO 81611. For further information, call the rescue cabin at 925-7172.
