Rescuers find Aspen hut skiers in next county over

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN – Four backcountry skiers who were reported missing after they failed to return from an Aspen-area ski hut on Monday have been located, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

Reports from the field shortly before noon indicate the skiers are uninjured, the sheriff’s office said. The group sought shelter in the Dorchester Guard Station, located about eight miles south of the Goodwin-Green Hut, in Gunnison County.

Two Mountain Rescue Aspen team members and two members of West Eagle Search and Rescue located the ski party, using snowmobiles. They will be led out of the wilderness by rescuers, who will take the group south toward Taylor Park Reservoir in Gunnison County, the sheriff’s office said. Arrangements are being made to reunite the party with their friends in Aspen.

The men had booked the Goodwin-Green Hut for the nights of March 26-28, but told friends they would exit the backcountry on Monday, March 28. Heavy snow fell Monday in the mountains around Aspen; when the party did not return to their vehicle by Tuesday afternoon, a search by snowmobile was initiated.

The hut is located off Richmond Ridge, which extends south off the summit of Aspen Mountain. It can be accessed from the ridge and via Express Creek Road, south of Aspen. The party’s car was parked at Ashcroft, near the bottom of Express Creek Road.
