Rescuers aid stranded skiers outside Snowmass Ski Area

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

SNOWMASS – Rescuers helped a group of seven skiers find their way out of the backcountry Saturday after they became lost outside the Snowmass Ski Area.

The group left the ski area boundary from the top and wound up in the Willow Creek drainage, a common spot for rescue calls in the Snowmass backcountry. The group called authorities at about 2:45 p.m. A two-person rescue team from the Snowmass Ski Patrol headed into Willow Creek from the top of the ski area at about 3:15 p.m. and found the skiers at about 4:30 p.m., according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.

Though one member of the group was reported suffering from diabetes, all members of the group were doing well when patrollers reached them, the sheriff’s office said.

The Willow Creek area has been active with recent avalanche activity, according to the sheriff’s office. None of the stranded skiers were equipped with avalanche rescue equipment, nor were they wearing avalanche beacons.

The group was led out of the backcountry at about 6:05 p.m. Willow Creek drains off the back side of Snowmass Ski Area, emptying into Maroon Creek in the area of T-Lazy 7 Ranch, about 3 miles up Maroon Creek Road.

In addition to the ski patrol, members of Mountain Rescue Aspen and the sheriff’s office responded to the rescue call.
