GARFIELD COUNTY ” Republicans prevailed in close races for Garfield County commissioner seats on Tuesday, according to preliminary, unofficial election results.

Incumbent Commissioner John Martin beat Democratic challenger Stephen Bershenyi, 11,030 to 10,680. Republican candidate Mike Samson outpolled Democrat Steve Carter, 11,143 to 10,485.

The election results weren’t available until about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Garfield County voters were evenly split in the presidential vote ” 11,223 people voted for John McCain and the same number cast ballots for President-elect Barack Obama.
