Reprise for Aspen marketing district?

ASPEN – Discussions to again bring a marketing district to Aspen voters are under way.

The Aspen Chamber Resort Association and Aspen Lodging Association sought voter approval of a marketing district last fall, but a ballot snafu led the county clerk to pull the question shortly before the election.

That district had limited boundaries within the city of Aspen, and only voters within the district could vote on its formation. This time, proponents appear to be leaning toward a city-wide district and a city-wide vote, said Debbie Braun, president of the ACRA.

“I kind of feel like the public sentiment was, we’d vote for it if you’d give us a chance to vote for it,” she said.

ACRA representatives will meet with the lodging association next month before going before the City Council in March, Braun said.

Last year’s marketing district proposal sought an additional 1 percent sales tax on top of an existing 0.5 percent lodging tax that is devoted to marketing the resort.
