Reid sentenced to 53 months

DENVER – A federal judge sentenced Aspen resident Wayne Reid to 53 months of prison and ordered him to forfeit $116,614 in cash for his role in a cocaine-trafficking ring.

Reid was sentenced Monday in the U.S. District Court of Denver, court records show. Following the 31-minute hearing, he was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, according to court documents.

The Drug Enforcement Administration had labeled Reid, 66, as a key figure in an Aspen-to-Los Angeles cocaine network that had been in place for 15 years, transporting more than 200 kilograms of the drug.

Reid received a reduced sentence because of his cooperation with the DEA’s investigation into the cocaine case.

“In particular, Mr. Reid provided significant and corroborating information which assisted the United States in the prosecution of Montgomery Chitty,” read a motion filed last week by federal prosecutors.

Chitty, a former Aspen resident, was convicted of cocaine trafficking after a jury trial last month.

Reid originally faced nine felony counts after he and five other Aspen-area residents were arrested in May 2011. In January 2012, he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to sell more than 5 kilograms of cocaine.
