EDWARDS — Two men suspected of robbing their way up Cottonwood Pass while drunk face 54 charges between them.

Robert Lee Larsen and Tony Kelly, both 33 and both from Glenwood Springs, remain in the Eagle County Detention Center on $25,000 cash bonds.

Police say they stole and then wrecked two vehicles and a motorcycle and tried to set one of them on fire. Police said they were drunk at the time of the incident.

Among the charges are aggravated motor vehicle theft, arson, conspiracy and burglary.

At the time of the alleged incident, Kelly was free on bond in connection with a felony charge in Glenwood Springs and had a long list of prior convictions. He was on parole at the time of the alleged Cottonwood Pass incident.

Larsen’s criminal background stretches back to 1999, beginning with drug charges, prosecutors said. Among the highlights are numerous contempt of court and flight charges, dangerous drug charges, a 2006 parole violation, vehicular assault in 2007, a habitual traffic offender charge and reckless endangerment in 2010.

On the afternoon of the incident, Eagle County sheriff’s deputies and the Colorado State Patrol were called to a rollover accident on Cottonwood Pass Road south of Gypsum. The rollover reportedly involved two vehicles — a Jeep and an Audi.

Larsen was intoxicated when he wrecked the Jeep, police said, and was ejected from the Jeep and seriously injured. At his first court appearance, he wore a hospital gown over his orange jail clothes.

The wrecked Jeep had been reported stolen from a residence on Cottonwood Pass Road, police said.

Nearby, police say they found the Audi stashed in tall sagebrush that they say Larsen and Kelly had tried to set on fire before fleeing the scene. That Audi had been stolen earlier that day in Glenwood Springs, police said.

Police quickly set off to search for Kelly, led by an Eagle County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit. Kelly was intoxicated when they caught him, police said.

When police searched the Jeep, they reportedly found several firearms and a small motorcycle that also had been reported stolen in the Cottonwood Pass area.

Sheriff’s deputies located the owner of the items, who lived in the Cottonwood Pass area. Police say the suspects had burglarized the residence around the time the Jeep was reported stolen.
