The Red Brick Council for the Arts held its first annual benefit dinner and Artist Tribute recently at the Doerr-Hosier Center with Betty Weiss being the first Aspen artist to be honored. Pat Fallin, president of the arts council, introduced Betty, who has worked in an artist studio at the Red Brick ever since the former Aspen School District building was purchased by the city of Aspen in the early 90s and turned into an arts and community building. The Red Brick Council for the Arts sponsors the following programs: an arts education scholarship program; Art Start, which is an annual local kids art show; Art Reach, which presents two free community art workshops: the Red Brick Roaring Fork Biennial Exhibit and the Summer Sculpture Garden.

Local artists and photographers also hold frequent exhibits of their work in the main hallway, and artists who have studios in the building hold studio walks.Aspenites are a traveling bunch of people, and the Tyrol of Austria is a favorite place to visit. Recently Mary and Jack Cronin held a party and several of the guests wore their favorite Tyrolean outfits. It is the time for the parties on the mountains. On March 15, a group of Aspenites held their perennial picnic, the Wine Party, at Blondies Cabin on the Silver Bell ski trail on Aspen Mountain. Hosts were Peter Belsky, Bill Bindley, Sid Hendricks, Ron Krajian, Walter Glass, Ed Peterson, W.T. Ray, Jim Riley, Steve Nardi, Don Crawford, Jack Crawford and Jack Cronin.

News of college students. Gigi Podolak has been named to the Deans Honor List in recognition of scholastic achievement at the University of Colorado School of Architecture and Planning. She is a member of the Honor Society Magna-Cum-Laude. This is a significant accomplishment considering Podolaks level of community involvement and her demanding school schedule. Gigi is the daughter of Charley and Liza Podolak.Kathryn Hodges has been accepted into a masters program at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) in Providence, R.I., next fall. She is the daughter of Dutch Hodges of Denver and Bill Hodges of Aspen. Says Dutch, All the teaching at Anderson Ranch and Colorado College paid off as Bill and I have no artistic talent.Former Aspenite Ruth Whyte recently celebrated her 80th birthday in Denver.In the current issue of Town & Country magazine, Renee Crown, of the Crown family that owns the Aspen Skiing Co., is pictured in a ball gown attending the 53rd Annual Opening Night Gala at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The magazine also mentions that the San Francisco Ballet, Americas oldest professional ballet company, celebrates its 75th anniversary this year with a New Works Festival. The ballet company was founded by Willam Christensen, who also founded Ballet West at the University of Utah and brought that ballet company to Aspen for many summer performances.Undercurrent … The SUVs have taken over the sidewalk at Carls. They are so long that their snouts cover the sidewalk, making the pedestrians walk in the street.
