Reconsider Walla’s case
Dear Editor:I am writing this letter in support of Ms. Kristin Walla’s desire and pursuit to join the boys high school golf team at Aspen High School. I can attest to the fact that her opportunities to compete for a Division I intercollegiate golf program would be greater in this situation if she did have the chance to compete as a member of the boys program. Subsequently, her opportunity to obtain scholarship dollars could also be greatly affected by this association. The vast majority of collegiate golf coaches do take a hard look at the perspective student/athlete’s high school record for success within the state’s system. The coach gains valuable insight into the student/athlete’s golfing ability, a good read on her ability to balance the academic/athletic demands, and her ability to function successful within a “team” framework, which is so important at the collegiate level. Kristin would have a terrific opportunity to showcase all of her skills with her membership on the boys team this fall. My understanding is that it’s unsure at this time whether or not Aspen High School will indeed be fielding a girls golf team next spring, and certainly unable to field a team of the stature of the boys team.I hope you will reconsider your decision allowing Kristin to become a member of the boys high school team and I would applaud your decision to do so. I hope I have shed some light on the importance of your decision to her future golf and will feel free to contact me at your convenience if I can be of further assistance. I can be reached at my office phone at 515-294-9959 or via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.Best of luck.Julie D. Manninghead women’s golf coachIowa State UniversityAmes, Iowa
