Real music happens

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:Last week, real music happened in Aspen. The jazz started with the Tierney Sutton Trio at the Silvertree in Snowmass. Great jazz singing (what a voice she has), one incredible band and practically no one there. On Friday, the masters of the Summer Jazz School performed in what many called the best jazz in Aspen in a long time with Christian McBride, Russell Malone, Wycliffe Gordon and Benny Green shining and wailing. Then, Saturday night at Highlands, the jazz party hosted by Iguana’s and the Ritz. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy had many dancing, but the real show was the students of the jazz school performing before the main act and jamming into the night in the bar at Iguana’s. What fun to see bassist Christian McBride playing the drums and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon on the keyboard with the students playing all around them. This was improvisation at its best.Thank you to the hard working staff of Jazz Aspen Snowmass, Iguana’s, the Ritz and the Silvertree – you helped make it a very special week in Aspen. I compare last week to Count Basie, Cal Tjader and Gene Krupa at the Jerome in 1966.Andy HansonAspen
