Reading up a 100-book storm

Dear Editor:The first-grade teachers at Aspen Elementary School, along with the staff at the Aspen Recreation Center and Mark Campisi of Domino’s Pizza, challenged every first-grade student attending Aspen Elementary School to read 100 books in 100 days. As an incentive, ARC offered a complimentary one day ice skating pass to every child who met the goal and Mark Campisi of Domino’s offered the children a pizza luncheon. Our Reading Challenge began in late November as the children eagerly set to work reading up a storm every night at home. The first-grade teachers delighted in watching their children’s excitement at meeting the goal. After reading books at home, the children wrote down the titles of the books on strips of paper and stapled them together to form chains. Back at school, as the chains grew longer and longer, each teacher noticed the soaring reading levels of their children. We want to thank the Aspen Recreation Center and Domino’s pizza for their incredibly generous and motivating support for our children. “It takes a village to raise a child.” We are so thankful that we live in such a beautiful village! We feel overwhelmed by the kindness and support of our community. Mary Owens/AES first-grade teachersAspen
