Reading program a hit
(This letter was originally addressed to the Aspen Education Foundation.)Dear Editor:Thank you for being an organization that we have always been able to count on. There are so many great ideas out there on how to reach children and families, but without the money to get these projects started, many times these great ideas just fizzle out. Over the past 14 years, you have generously supported ventures that have touched hundreds of students and families at Aspen Elementary School. This year, we want to thank you for giving our team the money to start a program that has affected every single child in kindergarten at AES. Without your support we would not have been able to kick off our kindergarten Read to Me program. The object of the Read to Me program was to provide kindergarten parents with high-quality children’s books to read aloud to their children on a regular basis. With your generous grant award of $2,000, we were able to purchase 115 take-home book bags and over 400 books in English and Spanish to send home for our kindergartners to enjoy with their families. There was a lot of excitement amongst the kids and their parents around these take-home book bags. As we went to the kindergarten classes to share the good news with the kids, students met us in the hallways, curious and anxious to get started. One parent commented that the Read to Me project “has given us new ideas on how to make books come alive for our son.” Another parent noted that “even the system of taking, caring for and returning the books teaches responsibility.” Most parents have enjoyed the variety of books in the book bags and felt that this program has encouraged reading at home. Thank you, AEF, for touching our kids in ways that make a difference in young lives.Jennifer WelkerLeslie RussellAES reading teachers
