Readers, reporter deserve more credit

Dear Editor:

In a recent letter to the editor that Glenn Rappaport penned, he accused Aspen Times journalist Scott Condon of misrepresenting his record and favoring the candidacy of Jacque Whitsitt (“Biased reporting by the Times,” Feb. 29, The Aspen Times).

I’ll admit that I don’t pretend to know all of the background behind the list of accusations that Rappaport lumps together in his letter to the editor. But I do know this: I have the utmost respect for Scott as a journalist. Over the past decade or two, Scott has been on the other side of the table from me on numerous occasions when reporting a story for the Times.

And like it or not, on every occasion, his articles have always been researched well and reported accurately in a fair and balanced manner. There are always two sides to every story, but when it comes to evaluating the content of a news article, I offer up a quote by Otto Von Bismark: “Never believe in anything until it has been officially denied.”

Challenging a veteran journalist of misrepresentation and political steering are very strong accusations, especially from a public servant running for the top spot in a small community. I also find it more than annoying that Rappaport, in this same letter, would ever think that The Aspen Times, as he puts it, could ever “decide the next mayor of Basalt.”

I guess he thinks that “we,” the electorate, are controlled by the media. I happen to know that we’re much smarter than that. Ladies and gentlemen, start your political engines.
