Re-1 board to discuss construction

Bobby MagillGlenwood Springs correspondent

Roaring Fork School District Re-1 board members are planning to hold a special meeting today to address construction at Crystal River Elementary and Roaring Fork High schools in Carbondale. The meeting will be at 3 p.m. in Superintendent Fred Wall’s office at the district’s administration building in Glenwood Springs. An executive session is scheduled for the first half-hour of the meeting. The public is invited for an open session at 3:30 p.m.Wall on Thursday said the board will negotiate a final agreement on a contract with A&P, the district’s contractor for its construction in Carbondale. In order to meet the district’s Dec. 15 construction deadline, A&P requested that it begin construction on the schools as soon as possible. Wall said the district didn’t want to wait until the board’s next regular meeting on Feb. 22. School board administrative assistant Cyndy Hallford said the meeting will likely be a massive phone conference. Most board members won’t actually be present in the building but will conduct business on the phone, she said. Construction was also the subject of a news release the district sent out Thursday. It announced that construction projects at its schools in Basalt are on schedule. The elevator shaft at the new Basalt Elementary School is under construction, and the skeletal structure of the school will soon be evident. The school’s modular classrooms will be removed this summer.Steel for two new classrooms at Basalt Middle School will be erected by early March, and steel for the new Basalt High School wing will be erected next month.
