Rappaport is true leader

Dear Editor:

Wednesday’s letter from Monroe Summers (“Whitsitt will help protect town,” The Aspen Times) on Glenn Rappaport’s mayoral candidacy seems, to me, to embody the scare tactics of an angry minority in Basalt that I don’t know.

Some of us who live in Basalt want our community to stay vital, prosperous and sustainable, and we want the business community to prosper. For that to happen, sometimes things have to change!

Summers seems not to understand this. This town is a living organism, and that means change and adaptation. The role of town government is to embrace the good ideas and make them better, while maintaining our small-town character. We can’t stay locked in the past, and I believe Glenn is the candidate to lead us into the exciting and hopeful future.

I was truly hoping that this hometown election would avoid the politics of personal destruction, but apparently that is not the case. For someone to say that Glenn has “rebranded” himself as something other than what he is – a consensus builder – is a distortion of the truth and a blatant lie. We can only hope that it didn’t come directly from the other “side,” but you be the judge. The ugly and desperate tactics of politics have no place in Basalt. We ought, instead, to stick with the truth and acknowledge the hopeful objectives of a great consensus builder and visionary.

I’ll be voting for Glenn Rappaport for mayor of Basalt on Tuesday. Please join me in voting for a true visionary and leader!
