GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Someone allegedly grabbed a woman walking at along Grand Avenue early Saturday and raped her.

Police said the rape occurred at about 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of 10th Street and Grand Avenue between the old church building there and a neighboring business.

Police released a composite sketch of the suspect Tuesday morning based on the woman’s description. He’s thought to be a white man of about 5 feet, 5 inches in height, 145 pounds and 25 to 30 years old. He has dark eyes, dark hair and was clean shaven on Saturday. He wore a dark baseball cap, a black T-shirt and light blue jeans.

Police Lt. Bill Kimminau said he believes the woman was a “young adult” and a Glenwood resident. He said she reported the rape on Saturday morning fairly quickly after it occurred. He wouldn’t release other details, saying they could compromise the investigation.

Anyone who knows anything about the incident is encouraged to contact the Glenwood Springs Police Department at 384-6500 or investigations@glenwoodpolice.com.

Police couldn’t pinpoint when Glenwood last saw such an assault. Kimminau said it happens less frequently than it does in a big city.

“Unfortunately, it’s not common but it’s not real uncommon,” he said.

Kimminau said people should make an effort to be aware of who is around them, stay in well-lit areas and avoid walking alone late at night.
