Rally around Alan

Dear Editor:

As a national board member of the Aspen Music Festival and School for many years, I have been very disturbed by the problems centered around Alan Fletcher since last fall.

My husband Ronnie and I attend many concerts during the summer. We always enjoy Alan’s interesting and apropos introductions at summer concerts. It is a pleasure to see him before and afterward mingling with the audience, always friendly, always smiling. He has become a beloved member of the Aspen cultural community. His seminar on Russian Romanticism was the best music appreciation course I have ever taken. Everyone who attended agreed.

As far as I can tell, he carried out board mandates to cut faculty and students. David Zinman is an outstanding conductor but it is time he and those disgruntled faculty members move on. It is time for the community to rally around Alan and his dedicated and talented staff. The 2010 program looks wonderful. Let’s enjoy it with Alan at the helm.
