Race for the Cure enjoys great backing

On July 19, the Aspen affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation celebrated its 13th annual Race for the Cure and for the first time held a silent auction in conjunction with the event.

It took place at the Rio Grande Park and was a tremendous success, due in large part to the generous support of this community. With the backdrop of Aspen Mountain, almost 2,000 registered participants and a multitude of spectators came out to support our mission, the eradication of breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.

Through its fund-raising events, the Aspen affiliate is able to distribute grants in the Roaring Fork Valley and has begun expanding its service area to include the Vail Valley and Garfield County. Our series of 5K races has raised well over $2 million, most of which goes to supporting education, low-cost and free mammograms and research. This would not be possible without the help and support of our national sponsors, local businesses and individuals who give generously of their time and money as well as all of those who came out to run, walk or just support our efforts. Thank you, one and all.

As newcomers to the community, we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from this community. The spirit of caring and giving evident here made chairing this event a doubly gratifying experience. Again, thank you to everyone who contributed to making our 13th Race for the Cure a fabulous success. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
