Providing answers to the public

Dear Editor:

The Aspen Art Museum is fully aware that there are a number of questions surrounding our inclusion on the May 5, 2009, city of Aspen ballot. It is our intention to provide the community with all the information it requires to understand our plans and to provide absolute transparency in our efforts to build a new museum at the former Youth Center site.

Beginning Tuesday, April 7, 2009, we will be providing the public with the opportunity to view the concept design for the proposed new museum. At the current Aspen Art Museum we will have a model on display of the site, as well as floor plans and elevation views of the conceptual design. This information is being shared with the public to impart our goals for the new building and to begin a dialogue about our programming in the new facility. The concept design is also a launching point for dialogue and not a request for approval by the citizens or elected officials. The land use application is a process unto itself that will take place should we be successful in May.

On April 15th, 16th, and 17th our design architect, Shigeru Ban, will be in Aspen to make a series of formal presentations of his concept for the building. I encourage everyone to plan to attend one of our numerous presentations and to stay tuned for specific days and time.

I welcome anyone with questions about this project or our intentions to please speak to me directly. I am more than happy to share with you the information you seek to make an informed decision in May.

In the meantime I encourage you to visit to the museum where admission is free, to everyone, all the time.
