Protect our troops

Dear Editor:Here it is May, graduation month. David graduated last year, class of 2006, and went into the Army. He is still alive, unharmed. Thirty soldiers were killed this past week in Iraq and Afghanistan. One retired astronaut died. Who did we hear more about? If we only cared as much about these soldiers’ safety as we do astronauts’ safety. Money is no object in protecting space travelers. The majority of casualties in this war are from IEDs, roadside bombings. This is preventable. Did you know that when John McCain recently visited Baghdad he traveled in a specially reinforced Humvee (as do all visiting VIPs)? David received the body armor he requested I send. The Army-issue vest has no percussion plate. A local parent of a friend of his donated the armor, as I had no idea how to get it. It is against Army regulations to have non-Army-issued gear. Does anyone know how we can get specially reinforced Humvees for all of the military to use? And when these courageous troops are injured, why are they not given the best medical help money can buy? How do you suppose our soldiers feel when they know they are being treated as disposable, second-class? Money is an object when it comes to their safety. The billions of dollars being spent has not ensured their safety. We are not doing our best to respect the lives they have offered for our nation. Support and respect our troops; insist on bringing them home.Kristi NichollsGlenwood Springs
