Professionalism at a tragic time

Dear Editor:

On behalf of Futuristic Films, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone on the Highlands patrol for their extraordinary efforts recently in Tonar Bowl. The rescue efforts required everyone involved to perform far beyond the call of duty. While we are sure it will be shrugged off with the just-part-of-the-job heartiness and humility that our local patrollers are known for, we would like to publicly acknowledge your immense professionalism and skill amidst serious backcountry terrain.

While there are too many of you to name, we would like to specifically thank Mac Smith, Peter Carvelli and Gary on dispatch for being incredibly professional, calming and understanding in what was, sadly, a tragic turn of events.

We also would like to thank the civilian skiers who helped in the effort with the toboggan on the ridge, Mountain Rescue Aspen and the good folks at T-Lazy 7 for all their assistance.

The death of Wallace Westfeldt was a tragic accident. No words can begin to describe the sadness created by his loss. Our deepest and most sincere sympathies are with his family, friends and the entire community. Filming with Wallace this winter, we were blessed to get to know him, not only as an outstanding athlete, but also as an individual of incredible warmth, humility and intelligence. We will miss him greatly.
