Probation for Snowmass cash thief

A 49-year-old woman who stole cash and other items from a parked car in February and then tried to pay the money back was sentenced to one year of probation Monday.

June Gordon, who was initially charged with felony theft and felony trespassing, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft and will also have to perform 40 hours of community service and pay back more than $900 in restitution, according to the sentenced handed down Monday by District Judge Chris Seldin.

Seldin said Gordon was one of the more remorseful people he’d seen come through his courtroom.

“You’re done,” Seldin told Gordon after the sentencing hearing was over. “Let’s not see each other again.”

The victim in the case — an employee of Taster’s in Snowmass Village — reported in December that someone stole $3,000 in cash, a credit card, gift cards and a “liberty dollar” coin from car, which was parked in front of the restaurant.

On Feb. 1, Gordon approached the woman crying and handed her an Alpine Bank cash envelope containing $1,100 and apologized, according to a police report. Gordon returned the liberty dollar coin, as well, and then later the same day went to the victim’s home and gave her another $1,000 in cash, the report states.
