Prioritize with the pool

Dear Editor:

I applaud the City Council for putting the ARC pool expansion on hold. As the former ARC aquatic director, it is my opinion that those in charge of making decisions for the ARC pool have made hasty, uninformed decisions that have backfired on them several times: A mural on the east wall instead of sound bunting, chlorine sanitation system instead of bromine ” putting off safety for fluff.

Last summer, I went to Water World in Denver. I watched kids on the wave rider. First, there wasn’t a huge line of kids waiting to go on this feature. It isn’t that easy. If you can’t get up and “ride,” then your turn is over. How boring is that!

Teens around here don’t want a grotto-like setting, they want to go to the grottos, which basically is a short drive up Independence Pass. They like it there because there is no adult supervision. Think back when you were a teen. What would you rather do?

If this all about what we can do for our teens, how about giving them the opportunity to go to winter driving school in Woody Creek. How about offering them internships that will give them skills to stay in Aspen after they are done with high school/college? Don’t pigeonhole these kids. They are not pigeons.

If Aspen residents voted for another body of water in the small, but pretty open, space next to the ARC pool, find something that will not take up all of the space, be available for more than the short three months of summer we get here, and make sure that it is not built before the entrance to Aspen.
