The spring is very well sprung, and we can start to talk about playoff positioning for all sports. It’s going to be a wild few weeks as the regular season winds down.

Let’s see how things stand as we enter a busy weekend of contests.

Boys lacrosse

Aspen boys lacrosse continues to roll through its competition, the most recent outing being Tuesday’s 14-1 win at Fruita Monument.

The Skiers are now 8-0 entering Thursday’s game at Eagle Valley (0-9). AHS already beat the Devils, 17-1, in the season opener on March 11. Aspen returns home on Saturday with an afternoon game against Heritage.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Aspen was holding steady at No. 3 in Class 4A in the CHSAA seeding index, which largely determines postseason seeding. Evergreen was No. 1 and Air Academy was No. 2.

Girls lacrosse

Aspen girls lacrosse is 5-3 overall following a 20-16 loss at Steamboat Springs on Saturday. The Skiers next host Eagle Valley on Thursday (6 p.m. start); AHS beat the Devils 25-0 in their first matchup on March 21.

Roaring Fork girls lacrosse is currently on a five-game win streak and stands at 7-2 overall. This includes Tuesday’s 18-3 rout of Eagle Valley. The Rams are off until hosting Aspen on Saturday morning in Carbondale.

The CHSAA seeding index has Roaring Fork ranked No. 7 and Aspen ranked No. 8 in 4A as of Wednesday afternoon.

Girls soccer

Despite a strong second half on Tuesday, Basalt girls soccer came up short in a 2-1 home loss to Coal Ridge. Trailing 2-0 early in the second half, the Longhorns got one goal back and kept the Titans on their heels with an offensive barrage the rest of the way but couldn’t get the equalizer to find net.

Coal Ridge improved to 5-6 overall, while BHS fell to 1-5-2 on the spring, the lone win coming against Aspen. The Longhorns next host Roaring Fork on Thursday (4 p.m. start). The Rams are 3-2-3 overall following Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to league-leading Delta.

Aspen girls soccer made it four straight games without a loss by beating visiting Rifle (3-5) on Tuesday night, 5-0, on the AHS turf.

Now 5-3-1 overall, the Skiers have won three of four, the other game being a scoreless draw with Basalt on April 10. AHS will next play at Coal Ridge on Thursday before hosting Roosevelt on Saturday.

Based off the latest CHSAA seeding index, the Rams are in the best position to make the playoffs, as they are No. 16 in 3A at the moment. Aspen was No. 37 and Basalt was No. 41 as of Wednesday afternoon.

Girls golf

Aspen girls golf hosted its annual home tournament on Tuesday, held at Aspen Glen. The Skiers finished third as a team with a combined 292. Steamboat Springs won with 255, followed in second by Fruita Monument (265).

Individually, Steamboat’s Katharina Cosby won as the only player under par, shooting 1-under 72. Her teammate, Kaitlyn Grommeck, was second with 4-over 77.

Battle Mountain’s Makena Thayer and Aspen senior Lenna Persson both shot 5-over 78 to tie for third place. Glenwood’s Antoinette Brasier recorded a top-10 finish, coming in ninth with a 95. AHS junior Josie Cole tied for 13th place with 102.

Golfers were right back at it on Wednesday when Glenwood hosted its home tournament at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale. Fruita Monument shot 251 for the win, followed in second by Aspen (265) and in third by Steamboat (268). Battle Mountain was fourth, and Glenwood was fifth.

Individually, Thayer won at RVR behind her round of 4-over 76. Grommeck and Fruita’s Addison Larson tied for second (81), and in solo fourth was Persson, who shot 83. Aspen’s Linnea Flynn was seventh (90) and Cole tied for 10th (92).

Regionals are scheduled for May 12 in Windsor. State golf is May 19-20 in Pueblo.

Baseball

Aspen baseball made it five straight losses on Tuesday by losing both games of a road doubleheader against Delta. Scores were 11-4 and 15-0.

Now 2-8 overall, AHS next plays on Saturday morning at Glenwood Springs. The Demons beat Rifle on Wednesday, 11-1, to improve to 8-5 overall.

Basalt hosted Roaring Fork on Wednesday, winning 5-4. The Longhorns are now 7-3 overall, while the Rams fell to 3-10. The teams will play again on Saturday in Carbondale.

Track and field

Area teams competed this past Saturday at a meet hosted by Glenwood Springs.

Highlights from Aspen include Jack Diaz finishing third in the boys 1600-meter run (4:52.32), while the AHS girls 4×800 relay was also third (11:25.64).

Basalt’s highlights are led by Towler Scott, who won both the boys 800-meter run (2:06.71) and the 1600 (4:34.58). BHS’ Jared Tennenbaum was third in both the boys 110- and 300-meter hurdles (15.38 and 41.20). The BHS boys 4×400 relay was second (3:34.60).

For the Basalt girls, Addison Raymond was second in the 1600 run (5:42.92), and Sidney Barill was second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.82).

Girls tennis

Aspen girls tennis is heating up with regionals only two weeks away. The Skiers have won their past two matches, beating Glenwood Springs 5-2 on April 9 and Cedaredge 7-0 on Tuesday.

AHS will close out the regular season on Thursday by hosting Vail Christian. Basalt still has a few more matches to go, including Saturday’s home bout with Cedaredge.

Class 3A state tennis is scheduled for May 8-10 in Colorado Springs.

Rugby

The Junior Gents high school rugby team will host PAC/DR in its fifth of six games this spring. That game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the rugby pitch in Willits. The Jr. Gents will finish out the regular season on April 26 at home against the Hammers.

The Gentlemen of Aspen Rugby — i.e., the primary summer side — is also playing a short spring schedule in lead up to its trip to super regionals in early May in Springfield, Missouri. The Gents beat the Denver Barbos this past weekend, 40-36, and will host Boulder on April 26 in one final tune-up at Willits.
