Preps: Athletes return to action after spring break hiatus

Spring break is over (insert sad-face emoji), but that also means prep sports are back. Let’s catch up as the local athletes attempt to shake off the rust this week.
Girls lacrosse
Aspen girls lacrosse got back on the field Wednesday night, losing to Battle Mountain, 17-7. The Skiers debuted at No. 8 in Class 4A in the CHSAANow.com rankings this week, while the Huskies (6-1 overall) are ranked No. 5, their lone loss coming against No. 1 Golden.
Now 3-2 overall, AHS will next host Fruita Monument on Saturday (4:30 p.m. start).
Roaring Fork, 3-2 and ranked No. 7, also returned from break on Wednesday, beating Summit, 17-4. The Rams will host Mullen on Saturday.
Boys lacrosse
Aspen boys lacrosse beat Vail Mountain on Thursday, 7-3, to stay unbeaten at 4-0. The Skiers also beat the Gore Rangers, 8-6, on March 17.
AHS came in at No. 5 in Class 4A this week. The biggest game of the season to date is coming up on Saturday when the Skiers host No. 6 Battle Mountain at 2 p.m. on the AHS turf.
Girls soccer
Aspen girls soccer returned to the pitch on Wednesday, losing 5-0 at Steamboat Springs. Now 2-3 overall, the Skiers will travel to Moffat County on Saturday before playing at Colorado Rocky Mountain School on Tuesday.
Aspen’s home opener will come in Game 8, when Basalt visits the AHS turf on April 10.
Basalt (1-2-1) will return from break on Saturday with a game at Vail Mountain.
Baseball
Aspen and Basalt baseball returned from break with a doubleheader against each other on Wednesday at Crawford Field in El Jebel. The games were complete opposites, with BHS winning a game 19-2, and AHS winning the other, 10-0.
The Skiers are now 2-3 overall and will next host Rifle on Wednesday.
The Longhorns are now 5-2 overall and will next play Saturday against Colorado Academy and Resurrection Christian.
Roaring Fork baseball is currently hosting its annual Trent Goscha Memorial Tournament in Carbondale, which goes through Saturday, weather permitting.
Girls tennis
Aspen girls tennis is 2-1 in matches this season, while the Skiers took fourth out of five teams at the Durango team challenge on Wednesday in their return from break. AHS is scheduled to compete Friday at Delta.
Basalt (0-4) returned from break on Wednesday with a 5-2 loss at North Fork. The Longhorns aren’t scheduled to compete again until going to Salida on April 14.
Girls golf
Aspen girls golf still hasn’t rolled out its full varsity lineup yet, but that could change soon. The Skiers head to Cobble Creek in Montrose on Monday and Tuesday. The following week, the Skiers will stay in the valley with tournaments on April 15 at Aspen Glen and on April 16 at River Valley Ranch.
Track and field
Aspen and Basalt are set to compete on Saturday at the Frank Woodburn Invitational in Grand Junction. Glenwood Springs will host its annual home meet on April 12, the best chance to watch track and field athletes compete locally this spring.
Rugby
The Aspen Junior Gents rugby team is now 2-0 on the season after a 48-19 win over Castle Rock on Saturday in their home opener at Willits. Game 3 of their six-game regular season is this Saturday at Palmer.
The Jr. Gents are the defending Colorado Tier II state champions.
